Equine digestion is the very foundation of your horse's health: the physiology of the horse's digestive system. So many aspects of horse health depend on the horse's "person/carer" understanding the reasons that compel the horse's natural diet and eating habits, and many complex health problems can be prevented or alleviated through a deeper understanding of how horses are made on the inside. It is never the horse’s fault when health problems occur: always listen to the horse, he tells you everything.

In the past, very little research has been done on Arabian horses’ nutritional needs which are decidedly different to that of other breeds. Now with the recent mapping by the university of Cornel of the Genome of the Arabian horse and the Straight Egyptian as a subgroup, they believe that the natural selection imposed by the hot and arid environments under which the Arabian horse originated and was traditionally reared, relying purely on human intervention to survive may have altered regions of the genome. It was discovered they are more prone to metabolic conditions eg, insulin dysregulation – insulin resistance and Equine Metabolic Syndrome, therefore, leading to Laminitis and other conditions such as OCD.
With this fact in mind, it explains a great deal. It stands to reason that Arabian horse needs far less starch and sugar in their diets. Feeds high in sugar and starch cause a rise in circulating insulin, because insulin is required to allow glucose (from the sugar and starch) into every cell for the energy required for metabolic processes. Too much sugar and starch or even relatively low to moderate levels of sugar and starch in the Arabian horse, in particular, the Straight Egyptian Arabian often results in insulin spikes and fluctuating blood sugar levels causing a raft of problems including colic.
